Use Word's Copilot to Draft Credit Memo Sections
What This Does
Copilot in Word drafts credit memo sections directly inside your bank's Word template (company overview, risk summary, management narrative) based on your notes or brief inputs. Faster than switching between Claude.ai and Word and reformatting each time.
Before You Start
- You have Word open with a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes Copilot
- Your credit memo template is open
- You have borrower notes or a CIM excerpt to reference
Steps
1. Place your cursor
Click inside the credit memo section you want to draft, e.g., inside the "Company Overview" section of your template.
2. Open Copilot in Word
In the Home ribbon, click Copilot (sparkle icon). Or right-click → Copilot → Draft with Copilot. A prompt box appears.
3. Give context and instructions
Type what you need, including relevant borrower facts. Be specific.
4. Review and keep/regenerate
Copilot drafts the section inline. Click Keep it to accept, or Regenerate for another version. Edit directly after accepting.
Real Examples
Company Overview section: "Draft a 2-paragraph Company Overview for a commercial credit memo. The borrower is Acme Fabrication LLC, a metal fabrication company in Knoxville, TN. Founded in 2001. Privately held by two partners. 85 employees. $12M annual revenue. Serves the automotive supply chain and HVAC equipment manufacturers. Long-term customer relationships, not project-based work. Use formal bank memo language."
Management section: "Write a 1-paragraph management overview. Key principals: Bob Wallace (CEO, 22 years in metal fabrication, founded the company) and Susan Wallace (CFO, CPA background, manages financial reporting). No succession plan documented. Use neutral, analytical language."
Risk summary: "Draft a 'Key Risks and Mitigants' section with 3 risks as a bulleted list. Risk 1: customer concentration — top 3 customers represent 58% of revenue. Risk 2: raw material cost exposure to steel prices. Risk 3: equipment age — average equipment is 11 years old. For each risk, include a 1-sentence mitigant based on the following: [add mitigants here]."
Tips
- For longer drafts, paste in CIM excerpts directly: "Using the following CIM excerpt, write a company overview: [paste text]"
- Ask Copilot to match your bank's existing tone: "Match the tone and style of the rest of this document." It can analyze the template.
- Use "Shorten this section to 150 words" if the draft is too long for your memo format
Tool interfaces change. If the button has moved, look for AI/smart options in the Home or Review ribbons.
